He's not bald, but his hair is falling out. What's wrong with my guinea pig?

Unless you have a bald guinea pig, you can love this sweet rodent precisely because its fur is soft and beautiful. But it's not always.

Guinea pig hair loss can have many causes. Here are some common reasons:

Natural fall

Guinea pigs' fur usually grows continuously and occasionally sheds naturally. This process helps the hair to regenerate and is usually nothing to worry about.

Change of season

Some guinea pigs may shed their hair with the changing of the seasons. For example, during the colder months, they may tend to develop a thicker coat during the winter, then shed the longer and thicker coat in the spring or summer.

Stress or illness

Hair loss in guinea pigs can indicate stress or health problems. If your guinea pig has other symptoms, such as loss of appetite, skin problems, or behavioral changes, you should consult a veterinarian to rule out disease or health problems.

Poor nutrition or insufficient nutrition

Improper nutrition or insufficient nutrient intake can also affect the condition of the guinea pig's fur. Missing or inadequate nutrients (e.g. vitamin C, protein) can cause problems with hair quality and growth.

It is important to note that if your guinea pig sheds unusually large amounts of hair, in patches or with skin problems, it is definitely recommended to consult a veterinarian. Your vet can examine your guinea pig and help you find the cause and find the right treatment.
