Fear of storms and fireworks - how can you help?

Even as an owner of three dogs, the behavior of the dogs can be surprising. Just when I thought I knew my dogs, they came up with a new habit.

All three dogs were adopted and found a home with us. Among them is a purebred labrador, which was used for breeding. There is a French bulldog, but there must be some English blood in it. They tried to fight him, we know that, because that's why he ended up in a shelter, but I also realized that when I put on the gloves used for gardening, the otherwise pious dog immediately attacked my hand. Then there is the dachshund mix who is a spoon in every juice, who was a 7-8-week-old puppy when he wandered away from home, but couldn't find his way home. The man from the local lawn maintenance company caught him and finally ended up with us after 2 weeks.

The labrador is also very hard of hearing due to its age (it will be 10 years old), but not only does it hear the sound of fireworks, firecrackers, and bangs, but the medium-sized dog squeezes itself through the dog door designed for a small dog or cat, it is so afraid. He didn't do anything like that in the first years. We thought he had changed due to his old age. Then something happened to our dachshund, because he never showed any sign of being afraid of the storm. Until this summer. He squirms, trembles, runs away.

What we can do in this case is to reduce our pet's frustration. We can do this by staying calm ourselves. Let's distract them by saying that they can get their favorite game in this otherwise stressful situation for them. This can turn what they fear into a positive experience.

Of course, it is a good solution to allow them to be near us during storms or fireworks.
