The senses of our pets are much more sophisticated than those of humans, be it dogs or cats.
We also use these abilities. We know that their vision, hearing, and smell work better than it does for us, and many owners claim without bias how smart their dog or cat is. There is no doubt that our pets will recognize us, for when we get home we will receive a joyful welcome.
However, we didn't really think that dogs even needed the owner's sight or smell. All you need to do is hear your voice and be able to identify it.
This was investigated by researchers at the Department of Ethology at Eötvös Loránd University and tested with 28 dog-owner pairs. Dogs and people were lured into hiding. It was the case that the puppies could only hear the voice of the owner. In fact, there were voices from strangers. The study revealed that dogs use not only their sense of smell but also their hearing during identification.
