Dogs look strange when they are not spoken to in their usual language

Why do we love dogs? Because they are loyal, our real companion animals, who are smart and seem to understand our language. Or do they really understand?

The Spanish researcher who came to our country, who began his postdoctoral work at the Department of Ethology at ELTE, was also looking for an answer to this question. His dog went with him to work in Hungary, and he wondered if his four-legged pet would notice that communication would take place in another language? Before this, he had only heard speech in Spanish, so he turned out to be a really good test subject.

In addition, 17 other dogs were included in the experiment and were subjected to MRI examinations, while speaking to them in Hungarian and Spanish. During the tests, it quickly became clear that they distinguish between speech and non-speech, and they also received an answer to the question of whether they are able to notice language differences. The answer is yes.

As dogs get older, they learn more about the characteristics of their owner's and other people's speech. This is a feature that has been shown for the first time in an animal other than humans.
