It’s only natural for a dog or cat to be interested in small rodents kept as pets.
However, interest is much more limited to nutrition and hunger than to making friends. This would be natural, as living outdoors would mean smaller rodents would feed on the dog and cat.
However, a dog living in San Francisco behaves quite differently. He realized that tiny creatures lived in their garden. He even tried to make friends with them. However, the road to the neighbors involves some digging on both sides. The hamsters in the garden dig their own tunnel, while the dog digs to make contact with the small cattle. Not even by accident is a hamster in danger. The hamster could be on the puppy’s diet, but he just sniffs at the little animals and looks at them.
