We watched with regret the struggle that the Australian population, animal lovers, animal rescuers, professional and volunteer firefighters and others involved in rescuing the animals had fought over the bush fire.
Such devastation has been greatly afflicted by nature. In addition to the destruction of flora, many populations of marsupials native to Australia have also declined sharply. Thanks to the bushfire, New South Wales koalas are in big trouble. Five thousand individuals lost their lives as a result of the fire alone, or 12% of the population.
We would think that if the fire is no longer a threat, there is no danger either. But this is not the case with koalas, as their habitat has also been scorched by bushfire. The surviving koalas have nowhere to go, they have no food.
The Government of the State of New South Wales is now working to change the status of koalas to endangered, as this could lead to greater financial support and much greater attention to nature conservation efforts (curbing deforestation).
