Zoos around the world have faced difficulties. Some so big that total bankruptcy was in sight.
The Canadian Zoo also ran into difficulties, and the main problems were caused by the proper care of its two giant pandas. The problem is the lack of bamboo, which is the main food of giant pandas. Because Canada does not have an abundance of bamboo, and obtaining bamboo is very difficult due to the pandemic. The food for the giant pandas was sourced from China, but shipments almost completely stopped when the epidemic broke out. It soon became recognizable that they would not be able to keep the pandas in this way, so the management of the Calgary Zoo decided that the two pandas would be better off in their own homes. Giant pandas living in all the zoos around the world are owned by China, including Da Mao and Er Sun of Canada.
The two pandas arrived in Canada in 2018 and would have officially remained in Calgary until 2023, but are already traveling home for their safety.
