The characteristic behavior of cats is the careful cleaning of their fur.
By licking their fur, they arrange the hairs and clean it. Their tongue then works like a comb. We know that we get rid of quite a few falling hair during combing and the same goes for kittens.
When they lick their hair with their tongue, the falling hairs get stuck and it gets into their body. A lot of hair gets into the digestive system and comes together into a small ball. In a good case, they throw this ball away, getting rid of the hair, but sometimes that doesn’t happen. And this can be a serious problem.
They try to get rid of the unwanted stomach contents by gagging and vomiting, but if they don't, the kitten may hear a cough. However, if the ingested lump does not get out of the animal's body, it can clog the gut and cause constipation.
In the case of long-haired kittens, this can be avoided by combing the cat’s fur regularly and today there are foods in which the formation of a fur ball can be prevented.
