The Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Association asked for the help of the population in assessing the Hungarian forest owl population.
Enthusiastic and amateur birdwatchers scanned their surroundings as well as experts and conservationists from national parks. Even kindergartens and schools joined in to search for owls. More than 500 joined the owl search.
As a result, about 16,000 forest barn owls wintered in 991 locations in 670 settlements. Birds of prey also have a major impact on rodent populations. So many owls can kill up to 4 million rodents, which shows how important these birds of prey are.
