The sight of the Hortobágy landscape at the beginning of the year was shocking for conservationists. They found corpses of dead birds of prey, plus mass.
By now, it was also clear what was behind it. Causes of death included wading, but also human littering. Moreover, experts have found a correlation between the two.
Protected birds of prey included barn owls, wood owls, barn owls, barn owls, and owls. The number of carcasses collected between January and March is about 150 specimens. One of the main reasons for this is the main road 4, next to which there is no wildlife fence. As the main food for birds of prey, smaller and larger mammals also travel along the way, so birds hunting for them are also at risk. Highways provide greater safety for wildlife because the wildlife fence does not allow them to be close to the road, so there is less run-off of birds there. In addition, man-made garbage dumped by the roadside or in illegal landfills also poisons wildlife, including valuable birds of prey.
