It is not enough that swine fever has come to the fore, it is now taking its toll on avian influenza and endangering a healthy bird population.
In a Slovak zoo, birds were being studied. Of the nearly 500 specimens of nearly 160 species of birds, two have been identified as having killed the disease. For this reason, forty living birds had to be sent to the outside world. These feathers lived with specimens for which the disease was detected. Further infection was prevented in this way. That was just one of the precautions. The zoo was closed for a while. The infection is likely to have originated from a free-living bird, and surveillance was therefore ordered continuously within three kilometers of the zoo.
Avian influenza has already been detected in several parts of Slovakia, and therefore precautionary measures are more stringent.
